Throughout the early going of the Toronto Maple Leafs season, Joseph Woll and Anthony Stolarz have been the two goaltenders carrying this team to a 16-9-2 record.
Since the very first game, Anthony Stolarz has surpassed all expectations, while Joseph Woll has picked up from where he left off last season.
At this point, head coach Craig Berube has not chosen a true number-one goalie, and based on Woll and Stolarz's performances, he really doesn't need to.
While goals against average and save percentage are great ways of determining a goalie's effectiveness, there is on advanced stat that people like to look at.
This stat is called Goals saved above expected and it takes into consideration the difficulty of the shots and the difficulty of the opposing team's offense.
Stolarz and Woll have combined for a goals saved above expected of 15.5 which just so happens to lead the entire National Hockey League.
There are certainly some fans out there who couldn't care less about these kinds of statistics.
However, what this does prove is that Woll and Stolarz are not getting lucky out there and they certainly aren't being given easy shots.
Instead, they are very much playing above expectations and that is exactly what the Maple Leafs should be excited about.
The Leafs will most certainly be a playoff team and as it stands, Stolarz and Woll are giving the Maple Leafs a tough decision, albeit a decision that only needs to be made months from now.
Only time will tell whether or not one of these two goaltenders ends up taking the reigns and becomes the full starter.
