The Toronto Maple Leafs are taking on the New York Islanders today on New Year's Eve and unfortunately, the team will be missing a forward, as well as a defenseman.

After a loss to the Washington Capitals on Saturday, the Toronto Maple Leafs are back in action against a hungry Islanders team who blew them out the last time they played each other.

Pontus Holmberg and Oliver Ekman-Larsson are out for the Toronto Maple Leafs

Yesterday, it was revealed that defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson was dealing with an illness and would not be able to practice.

At the time, there were concerns that this illness would extend into Tuesday and that he would not be able to play against the Islanders.

Well, those fears were confirmed on Tuesday morning as the Leafs announced that Ekman-Larsson would be out tonight.

To make matters worse, it was revealed that Pontus Holmberg would also be out of the lineup for the same reason.

Due to these absences, the Maple Leafs needed to make up some roster spots, so they ended up putting Auston Matthews on the injured reserve.

However, there is a catch here as Matthews is free to return whenever he sees fit.

As for today's game, this is a big opportunity for the Leafs, who are trying to exercise some of the demons from the last month.

It is imperative that they come into the New Year with some momentum, otherwise, they could be in for a very long January.

Having said that, there is no better time to get things going than the present. Today's match against New York kicks off at 1 PM Eastern Standard Time.
