Weeks ago, the Utah Hockey Club essentially stole defenseman Dakota Mermis from the Toronto Maple Leafs following a mandatory placement on waivers.

Mermis had just returned from an injury and the Maple Leafs were hoping to assign him to the Toronto Marlies, however, they had to put him on waivers before they could do such a thing.

The Utahns took full advantage of the NHL rules and claimed the defenseman for themselves.

After playing just one game for the Utah Hockey Club, Mermis was put right back on waivers, and reports indicated that the Leafs would be looking to claim him.

Although their NHL roster is crowded, it was said that the former Minnesota Wild defenseman would be the perfect veteran guy to assist the Toronto Marlies.

Moments ago, it was announced that the Maple Leafs finalized their revenge, and sent Mermis down to the Minors.

Because the Maple Leafs were the only team to put in a waiver claim, they were allowed to send Mermis to the AHL right away.

Had another team attempted to stake their claim for the defenseman, the Leafs would have gone through the waiver process again, and we're sure Utah would have tried to pull a dirty trick.

The original move by Utah never made sense to begin with, as they haven't even attempted to give Mermis much of a shot.

Much like the Leafs the first time around, the Utahns were trying to send Mermis to their farm system in Tucson.

Now, the defenseman will get to play in a system that has clearly wanted him since the very beginning.
