Overall, this was a trade that was a few weeks in the making. In the first 10 games of the NHL season, Liljegren only got to play in one game. Head coach Craig Berube did not care for him, and it shined through in his lack of opportunities.
There were rumblings that Liljegren had requested a trade, however, nothing of the sort was ever confirmed. Instead, it was made apparent that the Leafs wanted to shop him around. After all, he is a former first-round pick, so a decent-sized haul was almost guaranteed.
Despite all of this, there are some analysts and pundits who believe this trade is an "abomination." In fact, this was a word used by David Corcoran of Editor In Leaf, who absolutely went off on the Leafs for yesterday's move.
In his eyes, Liljegren was used incorrectly and this is yet another example of the Leafs being one of the worst-run teams in professional sports.
These are good points, but there are plenty of fans who disagree. The Leafs are fine without Liljegren, and by sending him to San Jose, they ensure that his on-ice results will likely be underwhelming. Essentially, it is a trade they probably won't regret. At least not anytime soon.
