Toronto Maple Leafs forward William Nylander is playing for Team Sweden at the 4 Nations Face-Off although he would have every right to play or Team Canada.

William Nylander is playing for Team Sweden at the 4 Nations Face-Off and fans are excited to see him in action tonight.

Was William Nylander born in Canada?

At the time of writing this, the Maple Leafs forward and his Swedish teammates are currently down 2-0.

Interestingly enough, Nylander could have played for team Canada if he wanted to. Why? Because he was born in Calgary while his father was playing for the Calgary Flames.

When asked why he doesn't play for Canada, Nylander gave a very simple answer, noting he has always identified more with his Swedish heritage.

«You know what? Ever since I was a kid, I've always seen myself as Swedish. So when I realized I was good enough to compete for the junior national team, playing for Canada never really crossed my mind. Although, looking back, it was technically an option.»

Unfortunately, Nylander was incessantly booed by the fans in Montreal tonight, although that is because he is a Leafs player.

Funny enough, Brad Marchand of the Boston Bruins got cheers, but he is a Canadian, after all.

No matter what, the 4 Nations Face-Off is about to be a lot of fun and Team Sweden has an opportunity to come back against Canada and run the table this tournament.

William Nylander will need to be a huge part of that effort, and it certainly will not be easy.

Hopefully, the Maple Leafs forward is able to help his team get some things together here.
