Gary Bettman Announces the Return of the World Cup of Hockey
NHL commissioner Gary Bettman spoke to the media before the 4 Nations Face-Off where he made a major announcement involving the World Cup of Hockey.
The World Cup of Hockey was last played in 2016 when Team Canada defeated Team World in what was a truly incredible championship game.
Since that time, fans have been clamoring for the tournament to make its return, however, we've been forced to wait almost a decade for new information.
When will the World Cup of Hockey return
With the 4 Nations Face-Off beginning today, Gary Bettman addressed the media where he revealed that the World Cup of Hockey is officially returning in 2028.
The plan is to have the tournament every four years, and it will always happen in the middle of a Winter Olympics cycle. That means we will get international hockey every two years, at the very least.
Olympics and World Cup are going to rotate every two years starting in 2026 Olympics, 2028 WCH, 2030 Olympics, 2032 WCH, etc.
Locations TBD, bids will be solicited by NHL/NHLPA.
This means the 2028, 2032, and 2036 iterations of the tournament have already been planned out.
If you are a hockey fan, this is absolutely incredible news and we are very excited to see the return of this one-of-a-kind tournament.
What does this mean for the 4 Nations Face-Off? Well, it is safe to assume this will be both the first and last edition.
Regardless, it was a cool idea and we are glad that the NHL decided to go through with it.
Hopefully, the players come together and give us some truly memorable games that will stay on our minds for years to come.
