Overall, Matthews has missed a total of three games. This is obviously not an ideal situation for the Leafs, in the least bit. However, they have gone 3-0 in that span.
The first team they beat were the Boston Bruins. From there, they knocked off the Detroit Red Wings and even the Montreal Canadiens.
While these may not be the best teams in the league, they were still solid wins that the team should be proud of. Tonight, they take on the Ottawa Senators in what should be a fun rivalry game.
According to general manager Brad Treliving, fans should not be expecting Matthews to play in this game. Instead, he is listed as doubtful.
This is definitely disappointing but it should come as a surprise to no one.
Matthews' injury is one that has reportedly been lingering for a very long time. Consequently, the team only wants him back once he has been given time to recover.
When he does come back, there is a very real possibility that he gets back to the production fans expect from him.
Even if he doesn't, there are still players on this Leafs team who have been sensational. For instance, we have William Nylander and Mitch Marner who are on a tear.
Not to mention, the emergence of Matthew Knies has gone a long way as well.
Either way, we wish Matthews well as he makes his recovery. Hopefully, he can come back while the team is still in the midst of a winning streak.
