Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews is one of the best players in the entire NHL but he has unfortunately been out of the Leafs lineup with an injury.

Overall, the Leafs have still played extremely well despite the injury to Matthews.

In the eight games that he has been out, the Leafs have won seven matches and have propelled themselves to first in the Atlantic Division.

Over the weekend and even on Tuesday, Matthews started to get back into the swing of things by practicing with the team.

With the Maple Leafs set to take on the Florida Panthers tonight, there was a sense perhaps Matthews would be able to get back into the lineup.

However, the team was hit with a harsh reality today during the morning skate, as the official lineup was set for the team.

Auston Matthews to stay out of the lineup

According to Luke Fox of Sportsnet, Matthews will not be playing today.

This is, of course, very disappointing to all of the fans out there but it should not be shocking.

He has been out for three weeks so it is hard to expect him to just come right back into the lineup like nothing happened.

Matthews needs to ease his way back into the game, and that could take a little while.

Having said that, the Leafs are playing well without him, and the Panthers will act as a test of how good this team actually is.

Meanwhile, the Leafs play the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday. If you want to see Matthews in action, it will probably have to be then.

Regardless, positive developments are happening.
