During the offseason, the Toronto Maple Leafs signed 30-year-old defenseman Dakota Mermis to a contract that was overlooked by a lot of fans.

Unfortunately, during the preseason, Mermis suffered a fractured jaw and it put the first quarter of his season on the back burner.

Mermis is a player that has flown under the radar in terms of the team's injuries so far this season.

However, a lot of this has to do with the fact that he is a depth guy and was never a guarantee to make every single gameday lineup.

This week, Mermis was back at practice and he even got some reps on the top defensive pairing.

Despite this, the Maple Leafs opted to make a tough decision regarding Mermis as numerous other players make their returns from the injured reserve.

Dakota Mermis to the Marlies

Mermis has been sent down to the Toronto Marlies for a conditioning stint as he comes off the long-term injured reserve.

The defenseman is not the only Maple Leafs star to have to go down to the Marlies for similar reasons.

Connor Dewar and Jani Hakanpaa went to the Marlies a few weeks ago after they came off of the LTIR.

Now, they are both on the Maple Leafs' lineup and are playing relatively well, all things considered.

It will be interesting to see what Mermis can do moving forward. Although it would not be surprising if he ends up getting put on waivers, or perhaps even traded.

Tonight, the Maple Leafs will take on the Florida Panthers.
