Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Chris Tanev is a beacon of accountability and he certainly holds a much different mentality than assistant captain Mitch Marner.

Last night, the Toronto Maple Leafs lost to the Vancouver Canucks by a score of 3-0 and some of the comments made after the game have raised some eyebrows.

Chris Tanev holds the Toronto Maple Leafs accountable

If you watched last night's game, then you would know that this was one of the team's worst efforts of the entire season.

Tanev was quick to admit as much, telling reporters that the Canucks were the better team in all facets of the game last night.

"Not good enough. They outworked us, outcompeted us. That's why they won."

These comments were a stark contrast to Mitch Marner, who delusionally made the claim that the Leafs actually put up a good effort.

Marner was subsequently roasted for his remarks, with some fans claiming that the forward should not be re-signed in the offseason.

"I liked it. I thought we played well, I really did. The last couple of games, we've been giving up plays to teams that aren't missing on them."

If anything, these differing mentalities reveal a troubling trend that could affect the Maple Leafs come playoff time.

Tanev has a winning mentality while Marner has that of a person who is simply happy with coming to work and getting his pay cheque.

This is not going to fly down the stretch and perhaps Craig Berube should think about giving Marner's assistant captain title to Tanev.

Perhaps then Marner will learn a thing or two about accountability.
