Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly has been struggling this season and it has led to a pretty wild take from none other than NHL Insider Nick Kypreos.

Morgan Rielly scored a goal on Sunday against the Philadelphia Flyers and it was a big one as it came in overtime.

However, the defenseman has been completely underwhelming this season with a net rating of -10 and just 20 points through the first half of the season.

Morgan Rielly to be left behind by the Toronto Maple Leafs?

While Rielly still has plenty of time to get his game together, there are some analysts out there who believe the Maple Leafs might move on from the defenseman if things do not get better.

Nick Kypreos is one of those insiders as he went on The Real Kyper And Bourne and made the claim that the Leafs will not tolerate this play for much longer.

"If he doesn't step up and lead this blue line - especially in the spring - there could be some major changes and I'm not sure he'd be back next season."

Trading Morgan Rielly seems incredibly impractical at this point given the fact that after this season, he still has five years left on his contract. He also has a no-movement clause.

Furthermore, he is making $7.5 million per year which is a hefty cap hit for most teams especially when he is a second defenseman at best.

Having said that, it seems more than likely that the Leafs are going to keep Rielly for the long-term.

Besides, these mid-season struggles could be completely wiped out by a solid playoff campaign which is what really matters.

The Leafs are first in the Atlantic division and that should be enough for the fans at this stage of the game.
