Jani Hakanpaa was signed by the Maple Leafs in the offseason under the assumption that it would be difficult for him to ever play again.
However, in November, the defenseman was able to crack the lineup and he even played in a couple of games.
Following these two games, Hakanpaa re-aggravated his injury and he was back at square one.
It must have been a terrible feeling for the defenseman who was even selected to play for Team Finland and the 4 Nations Face-Off.
Despite his eagerness to rehab in time for the event, it was revealed today that Hakanpaa will have to miss out on the tournament.
This comes just a day after Craig Berube said he had no timeline for Hakanpaa's return.
With this in mind, one has to wonder if we are ever going to see the defenseman play for the Leafs again.
The playoffs are on the horizon and with Hakanpaa not close to a return, there aren't many opportunities left for him to crack the lineup.
This is one of the sad realities of the NHL as injuries can chew you up and spit you back up.
Hopefully, Hakanpaa will keep the faith and eventually return to the lineup against all of the odds. It would be a true shame if this completely spelt the end of his career.
