Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews is still dealing with a lingering injury, however, he was at practice today and it came with a mixed bag of emotions.

Auston Matthews re-aggravated an upper-body injury while playing against the Buffalo Sabres, and now, fans are clamoring for the Leafs to shut him down until the playoffs.

Auston Matthews shows up to Toronto Maple Leafs practice

We are just a couple of days from the New Year, and the Leafs still have not provided any clarity on what kind of injury their captain is dealing with.
Having said that, the team did get some good news today as Auston Matthews was a full participant for the first part of practice.

Unfortunately, Matthews was not on the ice during the Power Play portion of the practice.

Typically, he would find himself on the first unit, however, this time around, the captain decided to go back to the locker room instead.

Subsequently, it was reported by Jonas Siegel that Matthews is expected to be out tomorrow night as the Maple Leafs take on the New York Islanders.

With 11 goals in 24 games this season, many fans have felt as though the captain's injury is keeping him from being his usual self.

Consequently, fans and pundits alike believe it would be smart for Matthews to be kept out of the 4 Nations Face-Off in February.

For now, there is no telling what the captain will do and whether or not the Maple Leafs can even stop him from competing.

All that should matter for Matthews and the team is the postseason, where fans are expecting to see some success after years of disappointing first-round exits.
