Morgan Rielly Speaks Out on His Diminished Role with the Toronto Maple Leafs
Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly has been struggling this season and it has led to a reduced role that has some wondering if he will be traded.
Morgan Rielly has been a shell of his former self this season and it has led to numerous reports about what might be going on with the defenseman.
Morgan Rielly attempts to bounce back amid Maple Leafs slump
A few nights ago against the Montreal Canadiens, the defenseman only got 16 minutes of ice time which was pretty jarring.
Against the Tampa Bay Lightning, the team decided to give Rielly some more ice time with a new defensive partner in Jake McCabe.
While speaking to reporters, Rielly acknowledged his struggles but also noted that he just wants to see the team succeed, no matter what.
"I think you're always trying to get better. I mean, you're never satisfied, you're always trying to improve. Play within the structure and optimize what you're doing to help the team, bring the best out of yourself. That's what we're all trying to do right now."
Rielly then went on to talk about his new defensive partner and how their chemistry seems to be pretty solid so far.
"He's obviously a great player. I thought we had good communication and played well. So, we're going to look to build on it."
The Maple Leafs defenseman has five goals and 17 assists so far this season which is well below what he typically does.
However, Rielly is known to be one of the few players on this Maple Leafs team who is better in the postseason so hopefully, that trend persists in 2025.
That said, fans are concerned about the team's number one defenseman, and understandably so. He makes a lot of money and he needs to be better.
