In the past, Mitch Marner would be one of the most scrutinized players on the Toronto Maple Leafs roster.
However, this season, whenever someone is asked about the forward, they will immediately tell you what a great guy he is and completely skirt around the question.
Steve Dangle, Adam Wylde, and Jesse Blake were all asked about this phenomenon on The Steve Dangle Podcast, and it led to a fascinating answer.
This led to some fascinating answers and an acknowledgment from Dangle that Marner has been given a whole lot of slack this season, and it is hard to imagine why.
However, one theory that was presented is that Marner has caught so much flack from the fans and the media that his peers are trying to overcorrect by protecting him more than he actually needs it.
Steve Dangle also went on to say that a lot of the Marner hate is self-inflicted by his agent, who lost a lot of goodwill in his last negotiation.
Having said all of that, Marner has been the best player on the Maple Leafs this season as he currently has 50 points in the first 37 games of the NHL season.
This comes with 13 goals and 37 assists, with three of those goals coming in a hat trick against the Detroit Red Wings.
Needless to say, it is hard for players to be negative about Marner, when he is playing so well.
Although as Steve Dangle and his co-hosts acknowledge, none of that matters if Marner does not perform well come playoff time.
