Auston Matthews' latest comments will have Toronto Maple Leafs fans in shambles
Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews is still dealing with a lingering injury and fans of the team are certainly concerned about his eventual return to action.
Auston Matthews' injury has been affecting his production since the start of the season, and it has reached a point where some believe he will need to miss the 4 Nations Face-Off.
Auston Matthews is being realistic and Toronto Maple Leafs fans won't like it
It was reported earlier today that Matthews will not be playing against the New York Islanders tomorrow.
Instead, he will remain out of the Maple Leafs lineup until further notice, much to the chagrin of fans across the world.
To make matters worse, Matthews was recently asked about his injury and whether or not he believes he will be 100 percent before the end of the regular season.
Although the captain was hopeful, he also noted that things are uncertain and that he cannot reasonably predict the future.
"I don't know. I hope so. That's obviously the goal. It's tricky with these things sometimes. It's a physical sport, it's a contact sport, so things happen out there sometimes that are out of your control. So I'm just trying to manage it as best as I can, and we can, and you just go from there. I'm not really somebody that likes to stay still for long, so I'm just trying to do what I can, maybe without overexerting certain things. I'm trying to just stay in as good shape as you can when you can't skate and stuff like that."
Meanwhile, Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube sympathizes with Matthews and all of the questions he has to field.
"When you're injured as a player, everyone is always asking you, 'how are you feeling?' and it gets annoying. When he's available, he'll let us know. The situation we are in with him is I'm preparing the team to play without him and the lineup to go. We will know when he is ready, and we will make adjustments from there."
As for Maple Leafs fans, they are not going to like these comments whatsoever.
It appears as though Matthews is unsure of himself, and that does not bode well for a player who is now the captain of the NHL's most historic franchise.
Only time will tell whether or not he can get over these injury issues and return to his usual goal-scoring self.
