Dennis Hildeby got the start for the Maple Leafs last night as they defeated the Buffalo Sabres by a score of 5-3.
Overall, it was a win mostly fueled by a hat trick from John Tavares, however, Hildeby was pretty solid as he turned aside 24 of 27 shots.
Hildeby actually had a pretty bad start to the game as the Leafs went down 2-0 early as the rookie goalie let in two goals on six shots.
However, the Leafs mounted a comeback and the Toronto Marlies star was able to keep things calm throughout the second half of the game.
Late in the match, the score was 4-3 for the Maple Leafs and the Sabres decided to pull their goalie.
That is when Hildeby tried to take matters into his own hands by attempting the coveted goalie goal. Unfortunately, JJ Peterka was right there to glove down the shot which seemed to be on target.
Instead, it was Tavares who got the empty-netter, and the hat trick at the very same time.
After the game, Dennis Hildeby was asked about his shot attempt. Of course, he was quite proud of it and was simply trying to do something special, which he had never done before.
With Anthony Stolarz on the injured reserve, it will be interesting to see what Hildeby's role will be over the coming days.
Joseph Woll is more than capable of taking charge here, although with plenty of matches coming up, the team may have no choice but to give the rookie some more opportunities.
