Former Maple Leafs forward taken off waivers by the Edmonton Oilers
The Edmonton Oilers have claimed forward Kasperi Kapanen off waivers from the St. Louis Blues, which marks the second time Kapanen has been picked up through waivers in nine months.
As reported by The Hockey News, the 28-year-old winger has struggled to find consistent form this season by having just one goal in 10 games.
Last year, Kasperi Kapanen recorded six goals and 22 points across 73 games but has faced challenges with productivity and health early in the 2024-25 campaign.
Kapanen missed time recently due to an upper-body injury and has also been a healthy scratch in five of the St-Louis Blues' first 19 games this season.
With only one year left on his $1 million contract, St. Louis placed him on waivers suggesting a potential move to their AHL affiliate which is the Springfield Thunderbirds, but this was before Edmonton claimed him.
The Oilers likely view Kapanen as a low-risk addition to help their forward depth.
While it's unclear whether he will immediately join Edmonton's NHL roster or report to their AHL affiliate, Kasperi Kapanen offers a polyvalent style as a bottom-six winger with offensive potential.
With his history of flashes of offensive skill, Kasperi Kapanen has scored 90 goals and 222 points over 10 NHL seasons with Toronto, Pittsburgh, and St. Louis.
If he can rediscover his form, Kapanen could be pretty useful for the Oilers, particularly given their need for consistent secondary scoring.
As Edmonton continues to push for playoff positioning, Kapanen has another opportunity to prove himself in a new team.
Only time will tell if he can make it happen.
