There were rumblings that Hakanpaa would actually never be able to play again and that the Leafs were going to just let him go. However, Hakanpaa eventually showed up to training camp and the fears concerning the defenseman dissipated.
That said, he was still on the long-term injured reserve, which meant it would take some time for him to return. Last week, the Toronto Maple Leafs sent Hakanpaa and Connor Dewar down to the Marlies for a conditioning stint.
They got to participate in a game against the Cleveland Monsters and soon, they will be back with the Leafs.
According to The Hockey News, Hakanpaa explained how he feels following his first game with the Marlies. Needless to say, it is clear that Hakanpaa just wants to get back on the ice and be with his teammates.
Only time will tell what Hakanpaa can do with this Leafs team. There is no doubt they could use some depth. However, their biggest issue right now is scoring. Either way, Craig Berube will be happy to get a player back.
