Mitch Marner's Camp is Reportedly Upset with the Maple Leafs and It's All Because of Auston Matthews
Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner is up for a new contact, however, the two sides are far apart on a new deal and Auston Matthews appears to be a factor.
Mitch Marner has been playing the best hockey of his career this season and he currently leads the Maple Leafs in points with 59 in 43 games.
He is up for a new contract extension, and while fans are eager for the deal to get done before the offseason, it seems like there is a power struggle at play.
Mitch Marner and the Maple Leafs are at odds
According to Pierre LeBrun of TSN, Marner's camp is hoping to make upwards of $14 million per season, especially with the salary cap.
However, the Leafs would prefer to pay Marner between $12.5 to $13 million as they don't believe he should make more than Auston Matthews.
Unfortunately, this has created a huge rift between both sides, with Marner's camp allegedly showing some signs of resentment over the situation.
"It's not been a headline story which is unbelievable. What I would tell you is that there is no question part of the dialogue that is a stumbling block is that much like Nathan MacKinnon's cap number much like Mikko Rantanen, they are pointing to Auston Matthews and I understand from a team perspective.
From an agent perspective, the salary cap is going up aggressively and depending on what happens it could be more. It's not the AAV that matters it's the percentage of the cap; and if the cap is going up it's a real stumbling block.
Is there a way to massage an AAV with a deferment on a Marner extension? Potentially, but that doesn't appeal to 90% of agents; and since the Frank Vatrano extension they are against the idea.
It comes down to this. I don't think the Leafs feel they can or will pay more than $13M, $12.5M? Is that enough for an 8-year deal? If that's where it is, that's the I think that's the clear line of demarcation, $13 million a year." This is not a good look for the Maple Leafs, as it could mean that Marner will not re-sign with the team.
In fact, Pierre LeBrun believes the Maple Leafs won't budge on their rule and that if Marner doesn't accept a $13 million deal, then they will just allow him to walk.
Overall, this feels like a slippery slope that could be straight-up disastrous for the team.
Marner is one of the best players on this roster and losing him for nothing would be incompetence and malpractice of the highest order.
