Liljegren was not being given a proper opportunity with the Maple Leafs to start the year and it subsequently led to him being traded for some draft picks and defenseman Matt Benning.
Benning has done nothing with the Maple Leafs while Liljegren has continued to play for an exciting and young Sharks team.
Yesterday, the Sharks defeated the Seattle Kraken by a score of 8-5 and Liljegren was able to nab the first goal of the game, just two minutes in.
It was a great goal and it was yet another example of what Liljegren can do when he is given the right opportunity.
However, this looks terrible for the Maple Leafs, as one X user pointed out how Liljegren already has more goals than numerous Leafs players combined.
Some of these Leafs players are supposed to be producing at a much higher level, and it is indicative of the team's struggling forward depth.
If you are the Maple Leafs front office, particularly Brad Treliving, you have to feel at least a little bit embarrassed by all of this.
The team would have been much better off just keeping Liljegren and giving him minutes, especially as he has three goals and an assist in 14 games so far this season.
You could make the argument that the change of scenery is what is helping him here. However, Liljegren deserves a bit more credit than that.
One has to wonder what the Leafs front office must be thinking at this stage.
