Prior to last Friday's game against the Buffalo Sabres, Matt Murray had not won an NHL game since April of 2023.
However, he was able to change that with a 24-save performance that saw the Maple Leafs knock off the struggling Sabres by a score of 6-3.
Since that win, the Maple Leafs have been forced to juggle Murray around between the NHL and the AHL so that they can circumvent waivers.
However, tonight, the goaltender is in Toronto for the team's match against the Washington Capitals.
With Joseph Woll starting last night against the Detroit Red Wings, Matt Murray has officially been named as the starter for tonight's game.
This is going to be a very difficult matchup for Murray as he must now go up against Alexander Ovechkin, who is officially returning from an injury.
Although Ovi may not be 100 percent, he is still a dangerous player and the Leafs goalie will have to be hyper-aware of his surroundings, especially during the penalty kill.
The Leafs are certainly full of confidence after their win last night, especially since Mitch Marner was able to pick up a hat trick.
As for Murray, this will easily be his biggest test of the season thus far.
In fact, it could very well determine whether or not the Maple Leafs want to keep the netminder in the lineup for the foreseeable future.
