The Toronto Maple Leafs brought in some solid players during the offseason, and one of the biggest surprises of the entire year has been defenseman Philippe Myers.

Throughout the early portion of the NHL season, Philippe Myers didn't get to experience a whole lot of playing time.

However, throughout the month of December, he has gotten more starts and has amassed two assists and a +1 rating in nine games played.

The Toronto Maple Leafs love defenseman Philippe Myers

Overall, these are very good numbers for a defenseman who has not had this kind of NHL success in years.

The Maple Leafs seem to love Myers and his size, and it turns out they want this relationship to last more than just one season.

According to Kevin Weekes, the Maple Leafs and the defenseman are potentially discussing a new contract.

"Given the fit between both sides, and value, I wouldn't be surprised to see the @MapleLeafs and D Myers gaining ground on a contract extension. #LeafsForever #HockeyX"

One has to wonder whether or not this is a good use of the Maple Leafs' time right now as they have plenty of other guys to sign.

For instance, the Maple Leafs also need to sign the likes of Matthew Knies, Mitch Marner, and even John Tavares.

However, Myers is low-hanging fruit as far as contracts are concerned given the fact that he would barely make $1 million per season.

Only time will tell whether or not this is something that Brad Treliving considers to be a priority.
