Toronto Maple Leafs superstar William Nylander is seemingly looking to protect himself following an incident involving Ryan Reaves and Pontus Holmberg.

Recently, Reaves was battling for a puck when he fell over and his skate got up high. During this moment, he almost hit Holmberg in the neck with his skate blade.

This is an incident that could have been really bad had Reaves' skate moved a couple of inches in the other direction.

It just goes to show that hockey is a dangerous game and that anything can happen at pretty well any time.

With this recent incident in mind, it should come as no surprise that Maple Leafs star William Nylander is out here trying to protect himself.

At practice, Nylander could be seen wearing some neck gear, which is something he never does. Ultimately, it seems pretty clear that he just wants to make sure nothing bad happens to him.

Neck protection still isn't mandatory in the NHL, but it certainly should be, all things considered. Only time will tell whether or not the league ever changes course on all of this.

The Maple Leafs are going into this weekend with a game against the Edmonton Oilers. It is a match that a lot of fans are excited about.

The Leafs are coming into this game with a solid record of 10-6-2. Meanwhile, the Oilers have gotten back Connor McDavid and are playing much better than they were when the season first started.

Both of these teams are still working out the kinks though, so it could be a while before either full hits their peak.
