NHL referee Mitch Dunning found himself in some medical trouble tonight following a collision with Colorado Avalanche player Josh Manson.

Overall, it was a pretty scary scene as Manson ran into Dunning by accident, which led to a huge tumble from the referee.

He remained down on the ice and seemed to be in a considerable amount of pain. The entire arena fell silent as the medical team came out to tend to him.

Eventually, Dunning was taken off on a stretcher and even had to be taken to the hospital as a direct result of his injuries.

In a statement from the NHL it was revealed that there is some good news here.

Dunning was taken to the hospital, however, he can move his limbs. Not to mention, he is also showing positive neurological signs.

Dunning taken to the hospital

"Referee Mitch Dunning has been taken to hospital for precautionary reasons following a collision in the @Avalanche / @NHLFlyers game. All neurological signs are normal, he is fully communicative and can move all his extremities."

Being a referee can be an extremely difficult and thankless job. There is risk of injury, and this is an example of that.

You really hate to see anyone on the ice get injured in the midst of a game.

Having said that, you mostly expect this kind of thing to happen to the players, not the officials.

Moving forward, we wish Dunning nothing but the best. He is a good guy and seems to be loved by his peers.

He also has the respect of the players and the fans, which is the sign of a truly incredible official.
