Things Go From Bad to Worse for Former Maple Leafs Player Suspended for Alleged Doping
Miro Aaltonen, a former prospect of the Toronto Maple Leafs, has been suspended indefinitely from the Swiss-A league after various allegations of doping.
Back in 2017-18, Miro Aaltonen helped the Toronto Marlies win the Calder Cup in his first and only season with the team.
Subsequently, he went to play hockey overseas, but now, he is embroiled in controversy after he was suspended indefinitely for allegedly failing a doping test.
Miro Aaltonen dropped by HC Kloten
In the aftermath of these allegations, HC Kloten dropped Aaltonen. However, Aaltonen was moving on from the team anyway as he has a contract in place with SC Bern for next season.
Unfortunately for Aaltonen, with this suspension in mind, there is no telling whether or not he will get the opportunity to play for his new team.
When the news first broke, the Finnish hockey star put out a statement claiming that the failed test was due to a drug he took at a nightclub.
"During the break before Christmas in 2024, I was in a nightclub and apparently consumed a substance for recreational purposes that is not performance enhancing, but is banned in sport.
I will get the help I need and accept the consequences of my actions. As soon as I am allowed to do so, I would like to return to my profession. I sincerely apologize to my loved ones, Kloten, fans and teammates for my actions."
It is good to see that Aaltonen is taking ownership of his mistakes and wants to take accountability for his life as a whole, as well.
However, it remains to be seen whether or not the Swiss-A league is going to be sympathetic towards his cause.
If Aaltonen is serious about going to rehab and making sure this never happens again, then there is a good chance he will get to play hockey next season.
This is still a developing story so we will be sure to bring you any updates as soon as they become available.
