Ovi is just 27 goals away from getting the record, however, just a few nights ago, he injured his leg and it had a lot of fans concerned.
Overall, it was originally reported that Ovechkin was going to be day-to-day as he just tweaked his leg.
However, today, Ovi and the Capitals got some bad news and it is certainly going to put Ovechkin's pursuit of the Gretzky record in jeopardy.
The team announced that Ovechkin underwent supplemental tests with doctors. It was here where it was revealed that he actually fractured his fibula.
As a result of this injury, Alexander Ovechkin will now have to miss the next four to six weeks.
Of course, this puts a significant dent in Ovechkin's ability to actually go out and break that infamous Gretzky record.
Considering Ovechkin is only 27 goals away, there is a high likelihood that he can still do it. Unfortunately, it probably won't be this season.
Ovi was on a torrid pace when it comes to scoring goals. As it stands, he leads the league in scoring.
By the time he returns to the ice, that will no longer be the case. Hopefully, he will be able to find that scoring touch again.
These kinds of injuries are always hard to watch go down. You never want to see such a legendary player have his body break down like this.
Ovi is 39 years old, so there is no telling how much time left in the league he has. Even if his Fibula recovers, who knows what other kind of injuries he could pick up?
Hockey fans will just have to hope that his body cooperates, going forward.
