Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews has been dealing with a nagging upper-body injury and before tonight's game against the Boston Bruins, he provided an unexpected update.

Auston Matthews has been in and out of the Maple Leafs lineup this season, which has led to a whole lot of frustration and uncertainty.

However, this weekend, the Leafs have a back-to-back with the Boston Bruins and the Philadelphia Flyers, which has opened up a possibility for the captain's return.

Auston Matthews returns to the Toronto Maple Leafs lineup

According to Luke Fox of Sportsnet, Matthews dropped a bit of an unexpected bombshell on the media.

After a week of non-answers from Craig Berube, the captain has revealed that he will play tonight against the Bruins.

Furthermore, Auston Matthews has every intention of playing against the Philadelphia Flyers on Sunday.

The captain's return was hinted at during morning skate as he was taking both line rushes and reps on the first Power Play unit.

It was an indication that he would be ready to go, although, fans and the media assessed this with some cautious optimism.

No matter what, it is going to be interesting to see how Matthews performs tonight given all of his injury issues.

There hasn't been a single point this season in which he has been at 100 percent. Having said that, no one knows if he is, in fact, at 100 percent right now or is simply trying to be a good teammate.

Whatever the case may be, it will be nice to see Matthews back on the ice as the Leafs take on one of their most despised rivals.
