Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews has been day-to-day with an upper-body injury for some time now, although it seems to have gotten worse.

Despite some presumably good news from Craig Berube this morning, Matthews just got with a devastating fate. According to the Maple Leafs, Matthews has just been placed on the injured reserve.

This is probably going to be a surprise for a lot of fans as Matthews seemed to be making progress. Instead, the team has taken it upon themselves to put Matthews on the injured reserve.

As for who will come up to replace him, Connor Dewar will be coming back from his conditioning stint a bit early. He was supposed to remain with the Marlies, but the Leafs have changed course.

Auston Matthews placed on IR

"The @MapleLeafs have placed F Auston Matthews on IR (retroactive to November 3).

F Connor Dewar has been recalled from LTIR conditioning loan and activated from LTIR."

It remains to be seen whether or not Matthews will be taken off of IR next week or sometime in the near future. However, it seems like the Leafs are more concerned about just keeping him healthy right now.

Whatever the case may be, this is not a great situation for the Leafs. Being without your captain in never ideal.

This is especially true as the team has had a few troubles this season, especially as it pertains to the team's record. They are 7-5-2 and there is no doubt that a winning streak could benefit them greatly.
