John Tavares has been having himself a very solid season with the Toronto Maple Leafs as the 34-year-old has 22 goals and 48 points in 50 games.
He has been carrying the load as the center for the team's second line, however, there has been all sorts of speculation about how his role may develop as the season goes on.
As we all know by now, the NHL trade deadline is coming up on March 7th, and there are all sorts of potential trades that could take place.
Brad Treliving has been tasked with making huge additions to the roster that can give this team what it needs to be successful in the postseason.
According to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, Tavares could be affected at the deadline but not in the way you might think.
Essentially, Treliving would like to trade for a second-line center who could then reshuffle Tavares over to the wing. It is a bit of a heavy-handed wish considering what is out there, but stranger things have certainly happened.
Overall, it is going to be difficult for Treliving to trade for a second-line center as the Leafs do not have an abundance of assets to trade.
The assets that teams would actually want are the untouchables, and Treliving needs to be careful about what he does here.
Meanwhile, there are rumors that the team will also seek to get themselves a defenseman like Colton Parayko.
If you are a Maple Leafs fan, there are plenty of reasons to be excited about the trade deadline, although getting your hopes up may just lead to disappointment.
