Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube continues to be asked about captain Auston Matthews and there hasn't been a single response that has inspired confidence.

Auston Matthews has been injured since the start of the National Hockey League season and a lot of fans are starting to get frustrated with the lack of clarity on the situation.

Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews remains injured

For now, the team is just trying to make sure that Matthews is good to go for the long haul.

However, there is no telling when he will be coming back and whether or not he will be forced to miss the 4 Nations Face-Off which takes place in a few weeks from now.

This morning, Matthews was seen skating before the team's game against the Washington Capitals, however, it was made clear that he would not play.

Afterward, head coach Craig Berube was asked about his captain and it led to a pretty weak answer, all things considered.

"He has been on the ice the last couple of days. Making real good progress, which is great, and he's feeling a lot better."

When Matthews has been on the ice, he has been solid, pulling 11 goals and 12 assists in 24 games so far this season.

However, is goal-scoring is way off of his usual pace which has led to the speculation that his upper-body injury is hindering his play.

Having said that, this is a season in which Maple Leafs fans are expecting some playoff success and if that is the case, perhaps the team needs to shut Matthews down entirely.

That way, they would have their captain ready to go in time for a deep postseason run.
