Auston Matthews has struggled at times this season and as it turns out, a lot of these struggles can be boiled down to a nagging injury that was re-aggravated against the Buffalo Sabres.
Due to this upper-body injury, the captain was not in the Maple Leafs lineup last night as they took on the Detroit Red Wings.
In the end, it was a good game for the team as they won by a score of 5-2, fueled by a hat trick from Mitch Marner.
Tonight, the Maple Leafs take on the Washington Capitals and ahead of the match, Auston Matthews could be seen on the ice.
Matthews skated on the ice for about 30 minutes and was wearing a grey jersey which indicates that he is an extra who will be out of the lineup.
This was ultimately confirmed by Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet who on Twitter said that the captain would be sitting this one out, which goes according to plan.
This injury has remained fairly mysterious for most of the season and fans do not know what to make of all of this.
In the 24 games that Matthews has played, he has scored 11 goals and has added another 12 assists for a total of 23 points.
Nick Kypreos recently stated that Matthews is feeling better and has no structural damage which seems to suggest that he will not need any kind of surgery.
Whatever the case may be, fans are concerned about their captain and they would love some clarity on the entire situation.
