This morning, the Maple Leafs decided that they would be sending Matt Murray back down to the AHL, where he will now get to play alongside rookie goaltender Artur Akhtyamov.
Meanwhile, Dennis Hildeby was brought up to the Toronto Maple Leafs, however, it remains unknown whether or not he will get to play this week.
According to Toronto Sun reporter Terry Koshan, the Leafs are still trying to figure out whether or not Murray or Hildeby will play this weekend during the Maple Leafs' back-to-back.
Perhaps the most interesting revelation in Koshan's piece is that depending on how things go with Murray and Hildeby, the Leafs are considering giving Artur Akhtyamov a chance.
In his first season with the Toronto Marlies, he has amassed a record of 9-2-1 and has gotten himself two shutouts.
Akhtyamov's goals-against average of 2.70 and save percentage of .901 aren't exactly spectacular although for the AHL, these numbers are actually pretty decent.
He is absolutely a goaltender that the Maple Leafs have been keeping close tabs on, and he could certainly be a viable option if things get tough.
Having said that, he is inexperienced so giving him an opportunity now would be premature.
Regardless, he is there, and if Woll or any of the other Leafs goalies get injured, then the Leafs will be happy to have Artur Akhtyamov in their system.
