Of course, the defenseman we are talking about is Dakota Mermis, who was previously acquired by the Maple Leafs during the offseason.
After returning from an injury sustained during the preseason, the Leafs put the 30-year-old on waivers, where he was subsequently scooped up by the Utah Hockey Club.
Unfortunately for Mermis, he has not gotten very many chances to show the Utahns what he can do.
He has played one game for the franchise, and it led to zero points and a -2 net rating.
Today, it was revealed that the Utah Hockey Club was putting Mermis on waivers, and the goal is to have him go play for Tucson in the AHL.
However, according to reporter Kyle Cushman, the Toronto Maple Leafs are expected to exact revenge on Utah and put in a claim to get their defenseman back.
Cushman claims the Leafs want a veteran defenseman on the Toronto Marlies, and Mermis would fit that bill perfectly.
Some fans were confused by this, however, given the assumption that the Leafs would have to put him on waivers all over again.
As Cushman explains, that will not be the case if the Leafs are the only team to put in a waiver request on Mermis.
Tomorrow, we will get a better sense of what is about to happen to the defenseman. Either way, Leafs fans will be paying attention.
