The two brothers were back home in New Jersey for their sister's wedding. They went for a bike ride and were ultimately struck by Higgins.
According to reports, Higgins was attempting to change lanes in a reckless fashion. This led to the incident which sent shockwaves across the NHL world.
Since that time, Higgins has been in jail and is currently awaiting a trial. Recently, he was back in court, where it was revealed he would be stuck in jail for at least 30 more days.
There is now a 30-day delay, according to reporter Kurt Ludlow. This is because New Jersey State police have yet to conclude their investigation.
At the time of writing this, Higgins faces 20 years in prison for the deaths of the two brothers.
In the eyes of many, Higgins deserves more, if convicted. However, it remains to be seen how this entire case is going to shake out.
Following the passing of the Gaudreau brothers, the family received a whole bunch of support on social media. Every single team in the National Hockey League has also paid tribute.
There is no doubt that the masses are upset about what happened, and Higgins must live with the weight of that.
Only time will tell whether or not he is found guilty.
