Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Matt Murray was recently sent back down to the Toronto Marlies and based on a new report, things may not get better for the veteran.

Prior to a win against the Buffalo Sabres on Friday, December 20th, Matt Murray had not won an NHL game since April of 2023.

Needless to say, his victory was widely celebrated around the league, and fans were hopeful that the goaltender could keep his spot on the roster.

However, after a loss to the Washington Capitals in which Murray gave up four goals on 31 shots, he was immediately sent back down to the minors.

Maple Leafs fans originally thought this was just part of the team's plan, which involved a circumvention of waivers.

According to David Alter during an appearance on TSN 1050, this is not the case. Instead, Alter believes the Maple Leafs would rather just go with Dennis Hildeby as the backup going forward.

"I would think so, AK -- I believe that we've got to that point now where the Matt Murray [experiement], it was a feel-good story when he came back. They really wanted to see what he could do and he got a win, and that was good, but there were some concerns in the game. Just the fact that he have two goals scored that were disallowed. Going into that second game, he has that first goal squeak right through him. There's a another goal that he would probably want back, and he just looked like a guy who could use a little bit more, in terms of seasoning and reps... This is an opportunity for Murray to get some more games, see if he can improve his game [and] maybe get one more opportunity. But, I think for now, Dennis Hildeby, on the depth chart, behind Stolarz and Woll, is number 3 going forward."

Two games is not much of a sample size, but in those games Murray came away with a goals-against average of 3.54 and a save percentage of .879.

Meanwhile, his statistics have been much better in the AHL with a 1.85 GAA and .931 SV%.

For now, Murray will just have to keep his head down and grind away to get another opportunity.

Although for now, things certainly are not looking too good for the two-time Stanley Cup champion.
