When two players come off of the long-term injured reserve, this kind of thing is usually the norm. However, there are some rules related to these kinds of conditioning stints. For instance, they usually last either three games or six days.
Unfortunately for the Leafs, they sent Dewar and Hakanpaa down at a very odd time. They only played one game over the weekend, and the next Marlies game is on Saturday. Simply put, they don't exactly have a whole lot of time to get their bearings straight.
According to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, the Leafs do have some options here. Because of the situation, they can ask for an extension from the National Hockey League. This extension would then allow them to keep Hakanpaa and Dewar in the AHL for a little bit longer, which will be beneficial for their recovery.
Only time will tell whether or not Hakanpaa and Dewar can have themselves a productive season with the Leafs. The fans want to see them back in the lineup and there is no doubt that it will be happening soon.
