Just now, the Washington Capitals and the Pittsburgh Penguins engaged in a shocking trade for Lars Eller.

The Penguins sent Eller to the Capitals, whom he has already played for in the past. It was a surprise move but makes sense given where both teams are at right now.

For instance, the Penguins have been awful to start the year. They got destroyed by the Dallas Stars recently and things have not been going well.

Meanwhile, the Capitals are off to a hot start with Alexander Ovechkin on an absolute tear. The team has been impressive so it makes sense that they would be buyers.

In this deal, the Penguins are going to be getting some draft capital, which is exactly what they need right now.

Lars Eller is back with the Capitals

"The Washington Capitals have acquired forward Lars Eller from the Pittsburgh Penguins for Washington's third-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft and a fifth-round pick (originally from Chicago) in the 2025 NHL Draft."

Despite still having Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang, it seems pretty obvious that the Penguins need to think about blowing it up.

They need a rebuild and they need to think about whether or not their longtime superstars deserve to be on a team that has no chance of making the playoffs.

As for the Capitals, winning the Stanley Cup will be difficult. They could go on a losing streak or simply not be able to continue at this current pace.

Either way, we're sure Eller is happy to be back with some of his friends in Washington. This is a pretty cool trade for that reason alone.
