So far, Matthews has missed a total of five games with this injury. However, the Leafs have gone 4-1-0 during this span.
Overall, it has been a solid stretch of hockey, but there is no doubt that the team would much rather have their captain in the lineup.
It is believed that the injury to Matthews is responsible for the slow start to his season. He has a nagging upper-body ailment and the belief is that when he comes back, he will be fully healed.
Ultimately, there is some bad news for Matthews today. However, this news was expected. Essentially, he will not get to play tomorrow night against the Edmonton Oilers.
Fans should not have expected him to be in the lineup, to begin with.
However, the Oilers are a good team that is currently on the up and up. Connor McDavid just got his 1000th point and he will be looking to continue on this pace.
Meanwhile, the Leafs are likely to start Anthony Stolarz who has been the better of the two goaltenders for Toronto so far this season.
As for Matthews, we are very hopeful that he can come back within the next few games or so.
The Leafs only play three games over the course of the next 13 days so there will be a lot of time for Matthews to get his bearings.
Toronto goes into their game against Edmonton with a record of 10-6-2.
